Start Potty Training
This page covers the short, intensive method most families use to get started — typically 2–3 focused days at home. The full Manual includes the extended version plus a complete troubleshooting chapter for when it doesn’t go this smoothly.
What to have ready before you start
- A potty, or a toilet seat insert plus a step stool
- Loose, easy-to-remove clothing — skip onesies and overalls for the week
- A big stack of underwear (expect a lot of laundry)
- A cleared schedule — the method works best with 2–3 days at home
The core method, day by day
- Day 1: Bare-bottom or underwear only, potty nearby at all times, frequent prompted sits, and a big reaction to any success.
- Day 2: Same routine — start introducing pants over underwear for short stretches.
- Day 3: Full underwear, and short outings if things are going well.
Some kids need longer than 3 days — that’s normal, not failure.
Boy-specific notes
- Sitting first — even for boys — tends to work better at the start
- Introduce standing to pee once bowel training is solid
Girl-specific notes
- Teach wiping front to back from day one
- Watch clothing choices — tights and onesie-style outfits make quick trips harder
Nighttime — a separate track
Night training is a different milestone — usually later — and isn’t part of the 3-day method. A couple of starter tips: keep the same bedtime routine and skip drinks in the last hour before bed, and use training pants or a mattress protector without treating it as a setback if nights take longer than days. The full Manual has a complete nighttime training section.
